A day date in downtown Chicago

Last weekend Dave and I went on a little day date downtown.  We needed to do a little shopping and I wanted to go to my favorite place on State Street to get dessert.  Not just any dessert, but crème brulee.

I heart crème brulee.

And the best place to get it near the theater district is Atwood Café.

So here are some photos of the little day date (because my mom reads this blog and loves to see pictures of us!)  Oh, and they’re all in black and white because it was a black and white kind of day.

Our church, South Loop Community Church, is right in the heart of the South Loop (duh!) and this is the view from the font door.  I think buildings are so lovely, especially in black and white.

We hopped on the train and took it to the theater district (red line stop of State/Lake for those of you interested).

On the way I tried to take a lot some photos of Dave but he wasn’t too thrilled.  Hence the fakey smile.

He’s such a good sport to put up with me!

When we got off the train we stopped by Daley Plaza and I snapped some photos of the famous Picasso sculpture.

In the plaza there  is also an eternal flame that burns for the soldiers serving in the military.  However, the pigeons just seen to think that it is a pigeon bonfire.  It was the hottest (literally!) place in town for those feathery friends.

And another building shot for you:

After the Daley Plaza we did some shopping at Macy’s and then went to the Atwood Café.

I love the Atwood Café because:

1. The furniture is ridiculously plush and comfortable

These are their regular chairs and are luscious crushed velvet.

But they also have small little couches for seating as well. Couches, people!

A comfy little love seat all to myself!
2. The décor is lovely.  They have high tray ceilings and gorgeous chandeliers and it’s located right off the lobby of the Hotel Burnham.

3. The friendly service.  For being a part of a posh hotel, the servers are very kind, unpretentious, and helpful.  Sorry, didn’t snap a picture of our server.  He did ask if we were some sort of food critics/bloggers though because we were taking a bunch of pictures.  We should have pretended we were…maybe could have gotten the meal for free…

4. The food.  I have eaten there for dinner twice, and for this day date we ate Saturday brunch.  The dinner entrees are divine, but my favorite is their crème brulee for dessert.  But, of course, they weren’t serving the crème brulee for brunch.  Nooooooo!  Our server did say he’d ask the chefs if they’d make some special for me (see, I told you the servers were nice!) but that didn’t happen.

Oh well, we did have some yummy brunch fare.

We started out with coffee, of course!  This girl can’t eat breakfast food without 3,2 1 cup of coffee.

I ordered my favorite breakfast food, French toast.  There’s came with stewed apples on top if you’re wondering what those strange objects on top of the bread are.

Dave ordered a breakfast burrito that came with some scrumptious looking fresh berries.

So there is the recap of our little day date.  Hope you enjoy the family updates, mom (and all you other members of the Fami-Ly)!

  4. Hi Sarah,
You really have an eye for photography. You're right, you really captured the spirit of Chicago perfectly in black and white.

I need to look up the Atwood. If it's just west of the Federal building, I think I might have been there about 20 years ago! Man, I'm old!

Might need to take hubby there for brunch :)

    1. Hey Dana,
Yes, you should do! Especially at night so you can get the dessert!

Thank you so much for liking the photography. I used to be really into it in highschool (like I'd develop and print my own pictures) but when my nice camera broke I lost inspiration. Now that I have a nicer camera I'm definitely loving getting back into it!

  7. Great photos! I definitely don't get downtown nearly enough considering I live so close. I'm not into all the traffic and paying for parking, but there's so much stuff to do!
